m = 5 supermirror – new benchmark by SwissNeutronics
As a result of the continuous development of neutron supermirror by SwissNeutronics a new benchmark for the reflectivity was set at 10-Aug-08. For the first time the reflectivity of an m = 5 supermirror exceeded 70% at the critical edge. The complete reflectivity profile is depicted bellow showing a reflectivity of 72% @ m = 5. Moreover the reflectivity at intermediate m-values is excellent as well: e.g. 80% @ m = 3 and 74% @ m = 4.
The coating was performed for the fabrication of a non-linearly tapered guide optic which is installed at the instrument TOPAZ, SNS. In general, this performance enables for new focusing neutron optics, boosting the intensity for the investigation of small samples of novel materials.
